Chalcedony Carvings and Cabochons | ||
Chalcedony is known as microcrystaline or cryptocrystaline quartz. Unlike regular quartz, the crystalization in the stone does not ever form any kind of regular structure which can be detected by the eye but is instead random and fibrous (but not completely random as the link at the right explains). The lizard carving below is from Turkish blue chalcedony. The turtle carving is grey chalcedony. Below these is the first four of our blue chalcedony cabochons we are adding. These gemstones have depth and color change that would be very nice for the right pendant. Bright sunlight causes changes in the color of the opaline areas to resemble clouds at sunset. Click for information and more photos and flash movies of carvings. |
;
"The chemical composition of chalcedony is 90-99% silica with some water and Fe and Al oxides as impurities. The higher values of silica content are found in the light or milky material; reddish and brown colours...."
